The Neuroinformatics Group in Bielefeld has been active in the field of Artificial Neural Networks since 1989. The group is led by Professor Helge Ritter and pursues research in several areas related to artificial neural networks, neural modeling, adaptive systems, machine learning and neural computation. Furthermore, current research programmes within the group are focussed on the improvement of man-machine-interfaces, robot-force-control, eye-tracking experiments, machine vision, virtual reality and distributed systems.

Several of the research effort are carried out within the Sonderforschungsbereich 360: "Situated Artificial Communicators" which was founded in 1993. The SFB 360 is shared between the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Linguistics.

A prime focus of the group is the development of neural networks for many different applications.
